You try to think

You try to think but your heart stutters in your brain
You try to love but your brain makes your heart stutter

You ask me: Is it always like this?

I put my two hands over the plastic bags you keep for lungs
I put my two hands over the bruised flesh of your face
I tuck you into bed, the way I wished my mother would’ve when I was little
No, I say, and even though you know my no means yes
we would both like to believe in beautiful things for a second
(even if we wish the second was more than a second –
even if we wished our seconds were second eternities)

I pull the comforters up to your chin (and that word, too,
       means no means yes)
I treat you the way I would my own daughter
I whisper sweet words into your open plastic bag lungs
and pretend the both of us inflate with invisible lightness
