to eurydice

In your eyes, pools
            as deep as memory

In your voice, silences
as solemn as a single rose

In your step, such a lightness
as even air does not possess

Under the shade of linden trees I remember
your love radiating through my being

I don’t have to eat the sun, I thought
I know now how it tastes, how it feels

I know what it is to be lit up from within,
like a Chinese lantern, buoyant, filled
with the promise of something new and red

Invincible, I can march into that other kingdom
I can face the house of death for you, descend
            into darkness,
            alone
